Despite years of constant travel to over 100\u00a0countries, I can\u2019t believe how often I still make rookie mistakes when I should know better. <\/p>\n<p>For example, over the years years, I have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Almost gone to the wrong airport \u2013 twice<\/li>\n<li>Mistakenly booked two plane tickets for the wrong day (yay, cancelation fees!)<\/li>\n<li>Overpaid for a taxi when I knew I was being ripped off<\/li>\n<li>Forgot to haggle for market goods (thus overpaying)<\/li>\n<li>Forgot to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/travel-blogs\/travel-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">buy travel insurance<\/a> until three days into my trip<\/li>\n<li>Didn\u2019t pack shorts on a trip to a tropical destination<\/li>\n<li>Forgot to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/find-cheap-places-to-stay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pre-book accommodation<\/a> during Christmas<\/li>\n<li>Didn&#8217;t rent a car in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/travel-guides\/caribbean-travel-tips\/curacao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cura\u00e7ao<\/a> (despite knowing I should) because I am cheap, and I ended up missing a lot of the island because the bus didn&#8217;t go there<\/li>\n<li>Messed up the bus times in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/travel-guides\/iceland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iceland<\/a> and had to hitchhike because I was in a remote area.<\/li>\n<li>Tried to move abroad to Sweden, only to have to change my plans when I couldn&#8217;t find a place to live.<\/li>\n<li>Flashed my phone while walking in Colombia and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/travel-blogs\/getting-stabbed-in-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">got knifed<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those are just the ones I remember off the top of my head. There are countless other instances in which I break my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/travel-blogs\/travel-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">27 cardinal travel rules<\/a> (hence why rule #27 is the most important).<\/p>\n<p>After all these years on the road, I still mess up.<\/p>\n<p>A lot.<\/p>\n<p>Every day, I receive a lot of emails from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/travel-blogs\/how-to-overcome-your-fears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new travelers that are filled with worry, fear, and concern<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>For example, I once had a woman email me was preparing to study abroad. She told me she thought she was making the biggest mistake of her young adult life. Looking at her two suitcases filled her with dread. Another guy worried that he wouldn\u2019t ever really be \u201cready\u201d to travel. And another reader was concerned about her lack of worldliness would only lead her to screw up.<\/p>\n<p>And like many, many other people, they emailed me asking for help. <\/p>\n<p>How can they avoid mistakes? How can they ensure that everything is going to go smoothly?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to look around and see travel writers as \u201cexperts\u201d and \u201cgurus\u201d who seem to travel through the world with seamless effort. We glide through airports, make instant friends with locals, and blend seamlessly into new and unknown cultures. We&#8217;re like ninjas.<\/p>\n<p>But I don\u2019t know anyone like that. All my \u201cexpert\u201d friends make plenty of mistakes. I&#8217;ve witnessed many first-hand, obvious mistakes from people who should have known better.<\/p>\n<p>But we are all human and humans make mistakes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/travel-blogs\/my-current-list-of-favorite-blogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Even the &#8220;superhuman travel experts.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s natural to worry about problems that might happen on the road. It\u2019s easy to let that worry and fear cripple you and cause panic. <\/p>\n<p>Before I went traveling, the worst-case \u201cwhat if\u201d scenarios consumed my thoughts. <\/p>\n<p>How would I deal with this or that situation? <\/p>\n<p>What if I got on the wrong train, booked the wrong flight, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/travel-blogs\/how-to-pick-a-good-hostel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">made the wrong hostel choice?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have done all three of those things (and more). It\u2019s easy to beat yourself up over silly mistakes. Hell, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/travel-blogs\/that-time-i-lost-my-passport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how could I have been so stupid as to leave my passport on a plane<\/a>?!<\/p>\n<p>But, with time, one comes to realize that if you don\u2019t occasionally make mistakes on your travels, you aren\u2019t pushing yourself enough. Mistakes happen to confused people in unfamiliar places, people who don\u2019t take preapproved tours and deviate from their guidebooks. Going to unfamiliar places and getting a bit lost was exactly the elsewhere I was looking for, even if that meant taking on some risks.<\/p>\n<p>Mistakes keep you growing. <\/p>\n<p>So you can&#8217;t let them get to you.<\/p>\n<p>All you can do is move past them.<\/p>\n<p>I long ago stopped beating myself up over my travel mistakes. Humans make mistakes. Experts make mistakes. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/index.html?aid=362916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Booking.com<\/a> as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Don&#8217;t Forget Travel Insurance<\/strong><br \/>\nTravel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations.
